The New Healthcare Paradigm

How Dr. Susan Changed the Course of Her Multiple Sclerosis/Autoimmune Health Journey
Many of you know that I speak often about my Circle of Prevention, which is available as a download on this website. These are simple, foundational habits I began practicing consistently as part of my own health journey after receiving a devastating MS diagnosis in 2011.
At the time, I was given a frightening prognosis that included progressive disability and the possibility of eventually needing a wheelchair. I was told to expect significant decline by my 50th birthday. Well, August 19, 2026, was my 56th birthday, and I am stronger than I was then - even after the physical challenges of a major car accident in 2021.
“My story is my own…it taught me the power of consistency,
physiology, lifestyle, and learning to work with the body
rather than simply waiting for the disease to progress.”
I don't share this to boast. I share it because my experience completely changed the way I think about the human body and healthcare. My story is my own, and it is not a promise that another person will have the same outcome. But it taught me the power of consistency, physiology, lifestyle, and learning to work with the body rather than simply waiting for disease to progress.
This newsletter is about the way I now look at the body - a way that is very different from looking only at a diagnosis or isolated symptom. I have tremendous respect for conventional medicine. There are things physicians, surgeons, emergency departments, and hospitals do that I simply cannot do, and their work can be extraordinary and lifesaving.
“But when we are talking about long-term health,
chronic dysfunction, inflammation, metabolic health,
nutrition, resilience, and prevention, I believe we need a wider lens.”

From a Symptom-Based View to a Systems-Based View
Much of conventional healthcare is necessarily organized around identifying disease, diagnosing it, and treating it. The New Healthcare Paradigm empowers you to ask a different question:
“What is my body trying to accomplish
and which systems might need support?”
The model I use is systems-based. Instead of viewing the body as a collection of unrelated parts, I look for relationships between systems, patterns, physiology, and the signals the body is giving us.
This way of thinking became central to my own healthcare beginning in 2013, and it continues to shape the way I teach today. It does not mean rejecting traditional healthcare. It means understanding when conventional care is needed while also paying attention to the everyday conditions that influence how the body functions
Think of the body like a cockpit

Picture the cockpit of an airplane with gauges, lights, measurements, and warning indicators everywhere.
One number alone does not tell the pilot the entire story. The pilot watches the pattern.
That is how I think about laboratory testing and Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis. Laboratory values can provide pieces of information about physiology. I look at individual biomarkers, relationships between markers, trends over time, symptoms, history, lifestyle, and the larger clinical picture. Functional or 'optimal' ranges are sometimes narrower than standard laboratory reference ranges.
These ranges should not be treated as universally established diagnostic cutoffs. Rather, they can be used as one additional lens for asking questions about patterns that may deserve attention.
A result that falls inside a laboratory reference range does not automatically tell us everything about a person's health. At the same time, a value outside a proposed functional range does not automatically mean disease. Context matters.

The FBCA is exactly like our crystal ball into our future health, if we don't make necessary changes.
THAT IS WHAT I HAVE ALWAYS SAID: It is literally why the FBCA is so special because you can make changes before they become a worse "diagnosis" that had hope and ability to change.
We do THIS by observing your FBCA results Dashboard so we know what to fix, first, next and last.
The Circle of Prevention
Many of the changes I discuss with people come back to the same foundational habits I call the Circle of Prevention. These habits can support normal physiology across many areas - including metabolic health, cellular energy, nervous-system regulation, digestive health, sleep, movement, nutrition, and recovery.
Think about something as simple as sunshine and time outdoors. When I was a child, we were sent outside to play and often stayed outside until dinner. Movement, daylight, fresh air, and social connection were naturally built into daily life.
Remind yourself that, “The New Healthcare Paradigm asks us
to notice changes, not with fear or guilt, but with curiosity.”
Modern life can look very different: apartment to parking garage, car to parking garage, office building and back again. We have created a world of incredible convenience, but convenience can also remove some of the everyday inputs the human body has historically experienced.

What Makes Up the New Healthcare Paradigm?
• Functional Blood Chemistry Analysis: Using laboratory information as part of a broader biochemical and physiological picture.
• Nutrition: Eating to provide the nutrients the body requires while supporting metabolic and cellular health.
• Processing and Elimination: Supporting the body's normal systems for processing and eliminating waste.
Recognizing that stress, relationships, emotions, and nervous-system signals are part of physiology too.
• Systems Thinking: Understanding that energy, communication, protection, repair, adaptation, and integration are connected.
• Resilience: Building what I like to call your health savings account to support the body's capacity to adapt and recover.
This is not about “healing a disease”
This is about supporting the body's built-in capacities for regulation, adaptation, repair, and recovery.
I am pulling these ideas together into a model for continuing education, practical tools, and community support. I created my course, The New Healthcare Paradigm, and our next step is a membership community designed to help people live these principles in everyday life - alongside appropriate traditional healthcare.
What this model is designed to encourage
• Earlier attention to meaningful changes and risk factors.
• Personalized, systems-based thinking.
• Measures and habits that help build resilience.
• Better-informed and more empowered patients.
• Attention to modifiable contributors to chronic disease risk.
• Support for healthy inflammatory regulation, metabolism, digestion, cellular function, and recovery.
• A shift from healthcare that is only reactive toward healthcare that is also proactive and preventive.

My dream has always been to help people pay attention to their bodies’ signals earlier
My dream has always been to help people pay attention earlier.
My own health journey taught me how difficult it can be once significant dysfunction and disease are already present. Prevention and early recognition do not guarantee that disease can be avoided, but they can give us opportunities to make informed choices sooner.
The journey is not linear
You may move forward, pause, or even cycle backward for a while. That does not mean nothing is happening. The body is constantly adapting to changing circumstances.
And here is something else I want people to understand: your goal and your body's immediate priorities may not always be the same. You may be focused on losing 20 pounds while your physiology is also responding to sleep loss, stress, blood-sugar changes, medications, hormones, illness, or other demands.

Weight, energy, hormones, symptoms, and recovery are influenced by many factors. We cannot promise that supporting one system will automatically produce a particular outcome. What we can do is create better conditions for health and make thoughtful choices consistently over time.
That requires patience. Grace. Compassion. Consistency. Faith. And TIME.
Partner with your body
• Listen to the body's messages.
• Identify stressors and patterns.
• Support healthy system function.
• Celebrate progress, not perfection.
• Every meaningful improvement matters.
We empower you with knowledge and choices.
Ultimately, you are the one who makes those choices every day.
We walk with you on your journey.

Coming next:
The New Healthcare Paradigm Membership site
The goal is simple:
Create a community of people
who want to understand how the body functions,
what it needs in the modern world,
and how small daily choices can add up over time.
We’re designing our Membership site as an affordable place for continued learning, accountability, and community. The plan includes:
Twice-monthly Zoom calls with functional healthcare teaching and Q&A
A community forum where I can respond to questions and comments
Conversations about topics such as nutrition, supplements, homeopathic products, wellness tools, and lifestyle strategies.
We also plan to continue adding educational courses on subjects such as weight management, hormone health, gut health, and sleep, along with accountability groups and guest healthcare professionals, including pediatric experts.
The Paradigm Shift
OLD QUESTION: What disease do you have?
NEW QUESTION: What is the body trying to accomplish, what is it communicating, and how can we support healthy function?
The New Healthcare Paradigm does not ask you to become your own doctor or reject the care you need. It asks you to become an informed partner in your health.
I want you to understand how much your everyday choices matter - food, movement, sleep, stress, relationships, sunlight, recovery, and the environment you create around yourself.
Your body has been working for you since the day you were born.
Let's learn its language together
You deserve personalized care, thoughtful guidance, and someone who truly listens.
My commitment has always been to help people uncover the root causes of illness and restore the body to the way it was designed to function.
Thank you for trusting me to be part of your health journey.

A note from Dr. Susan: This newsletter is educational and reflects my personal health experience and healthcare philosophy. It is not a substitute for individualized medical diagnosis or treatment. MS and other autoimmune diseases are complex medical conditions, and individual outcomes vary. Do not stop or change prescribed treatment without discussing it with an appropriate licensed healthcare professional.
